I’ve been thinking about this a lot-- what does clout even really earn you? The closest to an answer I’ve found is that local communities might be socially/culturally impoverished, so the game isn’t so much money or celebrity or popularity (or at least, not totally), but proximity to what everyone’s talking about.
But seriously, I do think that we've yet to learn how to create online communities with shared values and robust culture, so perhaps the clout gives a sense of belonging, as ephemeral as it may be.
